Country Reports: Uruguay
At the request of the Office of the President of Uruguay, EAAF provided assistance in the identification of the remains of Ubagesner Chaves Sosa and Fernando Miranda. These are the first identifications of remains of disappeared persons found in Uruguay.
EAAF conducted two missions to Uruguay to provide technical support to a group of local archaeologists searching for the remains of people disappeared in former military facilities during Uruguay’s last military regime. The team assisted with the exhumation, and anthropological and genetic analyses of the remains
EAAF's collaboration with the Uruguayan Peace Commission continued to yield results. EAAF members recovered the remains of eight individuals from a municipal cemetery in the Uruguayan province of Colonia. Although they are not yet identified, the remains are thought to belong to Argentine citizens thrown from military aircraft into the Rio de la Plata and the Argentine Sea. EAAF also identified the remains of eight Uruguayans who disappeared in Buenos Aires.
In 2001, EAAF's collaboration with the Presidential Peace Commission in Uruguay led to the identification of ten Uruguayan nationals disappeared in Argentina during the 1970's, and to the location of remains of Argentine citizens in Uruguayan cemeteries. Procedures for exhuming the latter are underway in 2002.
